Buying Guideline: Factors to Consider

1./ Power Handling

This refers to how much power your speakers can handle or operate. It can be measured by RMS or Peak. Between these two measurements, the RMS power should be more prioritized. It is responsible for the amount of power that it can handle continuously without any other interruptions.

On the other hand, the Peak power should also be reviewed. This is the amount of power that handles the short bursts.

2./ Frequency Range

The frequency range is divided into three frequencies – the low-frequency accuracy, the midrange frequency accuracy and the high-frequency accuracy. All of these categories make up the overall audio quality and each should be checked thoroughly. This category lets you know how much frequency the sound of your speakers can emit. The measurement used with this is Hz.

3./ Sensitivity

The sensitivity rating refers to the ability of your speakers to convert the power into sound. It is also known as speaker efficiency which describes the amount of power your speaker needs to operate a loudspeaker. It is usually measured with the decibel rating or dB.

The dB tells you how loud the speakers can be. Hence, the volume depends on the sensitivity rating. If your speakers have high sensitivity rating, they will be more efficient with the power they receive thus produce better volume and sound quality.

4./ Woofer

If you want to know the responsiveness and the quality of the speakers, you should check the woofer. You could say that the speakers are more effective if the materials used are lightweight and stiff. Polypropylene, for example.

Other high-quality speakers use woven fabrics like Kevlar, aluminum or titanium.

This is a loudspeaker driver that is responsible for the low frequencies. If you notice, the term “woofers” is based on the low deep sound from a dog’s bark “woof”.

5./ Crossovers

The crossover is responsible for delivering two or three output signals (high, mid and low range frequencies) from a single input signal. The frequencies are delivered throughout the different parts of the speakers such as tweeters, woofers and subwoofers.

For a better sound quality with less or without any distortions, you should opt for external crossovers.

6./ Tweeters

It may sound like, but no. This isn’t the social networking service. The tweeters or treble speakers refer to the type of speaker that can produce the highest range of frequency. These are built in the speakers to enhance the audio quality. So if the woofers are responsible for the low frequencies, then the tweeters are for the high frequencies.

he story behind its name is derived from the high-pitched sounds of the birds. The reason why they are called as “tweeters”.

7./ Size

It is also best to review the size of the speakers you are buying. These car speakers vary in size. However, the most common sizes of the speakers are 6.5 inches and 6 x 9 inches. The 6.5-inch speakers are commonly used for door speaker installations while the 6x9-inch speakers are commonly installed on a rear deck or rear doors.

Although these are the common sizes for the speakers, it is still vital to measure your vehicle’s speaker size before you buy new ones.

8./ Type: Component or Coaxial Speakers?

There are two types of car speakers – the component and coaxial speakers. Both of them offer excellent audio quality but, probably, the evident differences between the two are the installation and price.

The installation for coaxial speakers is hassle-free because the woofer and the tweeters are all included in a single unit. However, there could be a problem with the frequency range. But still, the audio quality is awesome. Moreover, the coaxial speakers are way cheaper than the component speakers.

On the other hand, component speakers have the best sound quality. That is why some users do prefer component speakers than coaxial. The audio quality is excellent and seamless. However, they all come with hefty price tags. They cost twice or thrice the price of the coaxial speakers. And with regards to the installation, components speakers sometimes require custom installations and hence, more complicated than the coaxial speakers.

If your priority is the excellent sound quality regardless the hefty price and less convenient installation, you should go for the component speakers. Otherwise, choose the coaxial speakers.

  • 6 x 9 inches
  • Delivers maximum output power of 650 watts
  • Multilayer Mica Matrix Cone Woofer

Pioneer is one of the best brands of car speakers on the market. No wonder the Pioneer TS-A6996R A-Series comes first on our list. I used this brand before and replaced my old car speakers with another Pioneer speakers is a great decision.

This 5-way speaker has more than enough watts to deliver excellent power and sound quality. Because of its sufficient loudness, there is no need for amplifiers. The mids and highs are clean and crisp which I found really amazing compared to the other brands.

Honestly, when I first installed them, I thought they sounded terrible. But I guess, you really just have to give it some time to break in! You’ll notice how powerful the sound quality is such as the bass, clarity and accuracy. The price is affordable too!

Perhaps, the downsides I found with these speakers are the lack of lows and the incompatibility of size. They are pretty good with the mid and highs but I think, they should improve the quality of the lows. But if you don’t mind that, these are perfect.

The size is also an issue for some users. Some found it incompatible with their vehicle. However, I think this issue is not a big deal and instead a reminder to always measure first your vehicle’s speaker size.

Pros

  • Clean and crisp highs and mids
  • Powerful bass, clarity and accuracy
  • 5-way speakers
  • Sufficient loudness; no amplifiers needed
  • Offers maximum output power of 650 watts

Cons

  • The lows need improvement
  • The size may not be compatible with some vehicles

2./ Polk Audio DB6501 6.5-Inch 2-Way Component System (Pair, Silver)

Polk Audio DB6501

Top Features

  • Overall Frequency Response: 35Hz to 23kHz
  • Nominal Impedance: 4 ohms
  • Power Handling (continuous): 100 watts
  • Power Handling (Peak): 300 watts
  • Sensitivity rating: 92 dB
  • 6.5-inch 2-way component speakers
  • Stainless steel mounting hardware

The Polk Audio 2-way component system is one of the most affordable component speakers that you can find on the market.

The continuous power handling is 100 watts and the peak power handling is 300 watts. With such power, the Polk Audio speakers can deliver excellent sound quality. The sound is perfectly efficient. The lows are fuller though the high-mids seem to have a sharp peak. Anyway, the overall performance is outstanding and everything just jive in.

What I also find impressive about these speakers is the 92 dB sensitivity rating. It allows the speakers to produce high-end loudness and volume. You’ll really enjoy every beat of the songs in your playlist!

Moreover, because of the high-end sound quality these 6.5-inch 2-way speakers deliver, the acoustics, the vocals, the rhythm of the electric guitars are all clearly defined. So you’ll also be able to notice which songs are at the highest quality and which ones that are not. These are superb!

However, there are some issues with the Polka Audio component speakers. The audio quality is nothing short of amazing but, I guess, the bass is lacking. It needs improvement. The acoustics and trebles are incredibly beautiful but it would sound much better with the low-end bass.

One more thing, these speakers do not seem to fit on other vehicles.

Pros

  • Delivers excellent sound quality
  • Clear, crisp and powerful treble
  • Affordable price
  • High-end quality materials
  • 6.5 inches

Cons

  • Lacking low-end bass

  • Sensitivity rating: 87 dB

The 6.5-inch Alpine component speakers are also among the best speaker sets that come in a nice price. They are not as expensive as the other component speakers on the market and yet they’ve got an impressive audio quality.

The clarity of the speakers are top-notch and they will definitely boost your audio. The acoustics, vocals, the musical instruments sound detailed, natural and clear. The installation is pretty easy too! You’d see when your purchase arrives, the grills are all well-constructed, mounting options are available and the crossovers are small. The speaker wire is also included in the set but I wish it could have been longer.

Due to its stunning features, the sensitivity rating and the high power handling, both the peak and continuous, the sound is delivered amazingly. I’d definitely give the mid-bass a hundred points! You’ll feel the volume and the loudness. But I think there isn’t enough bass.

Another downside I found about the Alpine is the quality of the highs. They are too bright.

Overall, the performance is stellar but only qualifies for a simple upgrade. Hence, if you are looking for a heavy-duty audio upgrade, the Alpine component speakers might not be the best choice.

Pros

  • Easy installation
  • Natural and clear sound quality
  • Impressive mid-bass, volume and loudness
  • Affordable price
  • Delivers high power handling
  • 6.5 inches; suitable for most vehicles

Cons

  • The tweeter has built-in crossover

If you really are on a tight budget but you want to give your audio a boost, the 3-way full range Rockford speakers might be the best choice. They are affordable and definitely won’t hurt your budget!

The Rockford Fosgate Punch speakers only require minimal power to deliver a high-end audio quality. Hence, for an extreme sound, you would not need to spend a lot of dollars. The highs and bass all sound heavenly. The mids are too. Though the bass would seem to dominate the sound, you can still hear the lyrics crystal clear.

I would also commend the design and craftsmanship of these speakers. The materials used are high-grade which enables the speakers to reduce or eliminate unwanted vibrations or harmonics.

On the negative side, the mount holes don’t seem to be an exact match. There is also a huge issue regarding the size. They don’t seem to have a standard size. That is why the Rockford speakers won’t perfectly fit on some vehicles. They also distort sometimes.

Nevertheless, the installation is still hassle-free and everything is easy to configure.

But for a bargain price and great sound quality, I’d say you give this a shot!

Pros

  • 3-way full range coaxial speakers
  • Excellent highs, mids and bass
  • Made of high-grade materials
  • Very affordable price
  • 6x8 inches

Cons

  • The mount holes are not an exact match

  • They distort sometimes

5./ JBL GTO939 Premium 6 x 9 Inches Co-Axial Speaker - Set of 2

JBL GTO939

Top Features

  • Sensitivity: 94 dB
  • Power handling: 200 RMS watt for the continuous power/ 300 watts peak power
  • Dual-level tweeter
  • Dedicated 12dB octave
  • High-quality crossovers
  • 6x9-inch speakers
  • Impedance: 3 ohm

If you need excellent car speakers at an affordable price, go for the JBL GTO939 Premium coaxial speakers. These 6x9-inch speakers perform high-end audio quality without compromising your budget. Cool, huh?

So, what features make these coaxial car speakers great? The loudness is commendable. It is sufficient and does not distort. I could say that it is one of the loudest speakers that I’ve tested. When it comes to power handling, the continuous power offers 200 RMS which is one of the highest.

The speakers are made of carbon-injected woofers. These woofers are constructed with a fiberglass-reinforced poly frame.

The sensitivity rating is 94 dB which is high for this measurement. The higher the sensitivity rating, the more it is capable of delivering excellent volume and loudness.

The power handling, as what was mentioned before, delivers the high continuous power of 200 RMS. However, the peak power is what I was a bit concerned about.

Its peak power offers 300 watts and this aspect of power handling is below the average. The peak power should be at least twice as high as the continuous power for the speakers to perform efficiently. So if you have 200 watts continuous power, it should have at least 400 peak power or more. Right amount of peak power prevents any damages in your speakers.

Pros

  • High sensitivity rating; excellent volume and loudness
  • Affordable price
  • No distortion
  • High continuous power; amazing sound quality
  • Features high-quality crossovers

Cons

  • The peak power handling is below the average; needs enhancement

Final Thoughts

Finding the best car speakers is no joke. You have to check all the features or specifications carefully before you settle on the one you think is the best.

Just like what I have done with this article, stating the reviews for the top 5 car speakers is a bit challenging. All of them, their features and overall sound quality, are pretty impressive. Some require subwoofers to make the audio quality better, but some don’t.

Undoubtedly, I would opt for the best car speaker that meets my standards and needs. It should also be the one that is affordable and has the best audio quality. That is why I’ll go with the Pioneer TS-A6996R A-Series 5-way speakers. For the overall performance, they have the best audio quality. They are perfect for boosting your car audio! Yes, I might be a bit biased, but these Pioneer speakers are the best and truly remarkable.

Before you buy the next speakers for your car, consider the factors mentioned above. Hope this buying guideline and the top 5 car speaker reviews help you!
