Design

Table Top

In the market today, there are at least two types of soundbar designs. If you have read my previous article, you know what these are. For the sake of those who haven’t, I’m giving you the information here again.

soundbar table top

The first one, and probably the most common, is the long and thin speaker that is usually paired using wireless subwoofer. It could be placed in front of the TV stand.

This type of design, however, has the tendency to block your TV’s remote sensor, so buying this type of design should depend on your TV set or the location of your TV remote sensor. Some soundbar designs are quite tall, which could be a problem if the remote sensor is on the lower portion of your TV.

Nonetheless, there are also available soundbars with this type of design that has the capability to accept commands from the front of the sound bar and enables the sensor to pass through and be received by the TV set. Or you can get an IR extender, and this will no longer be a problem.

Pedestal

Another design of soundbar is the pedestal one, also called a soundbase. This is sleeker compared to the traditional design. This is usually being mounted under the TV, which is why sometimes it is mistaken as part of the TV stand.

This type of design cannot block the sensor of your TV’s remote. However, since the pedestal type is not as wide as the tabletop, the sound field is also not as wide. Despite that, however, a soundbase has better built-in amp and bass sound.

Pedestal soundbar

So, in terms of choosing the style or design, go for one that’s more compatible to your needs. You might not want to have a soundbar that continuously blocks your remote sensor, but you might also be concerned about the quality of sounds that your soundbar speakers produce.

Features

Bluetooth

Before making a purchase, make sure to check on some of the features of your soundbar. Some soundbar lacks features that might be useful for you in the long run. For example, some soundbar might not have built in Bluetooth.

While there are options to add them later on, it might generate some problem especially if the inputs of your soundbar are very limited and has no more left for a Bluetooth adapter. This is true especially if you use your TV as a switcher.

With the presence of Bluetooth in your soundbar, you can easily stream music or audio from your smartphone or tablet.

Display

Aside from Bluetooth, other features to look for in a soundbar are the front panel display. While many manufacturers now already include this feature, there are some models that do not have front panel display. Having a visual feedback from your soundbar would help you determine some information like volume and others.

Display Sounbars

Remote Control

Furthermore, some soundbars do not come with a remote control. While it is a good idea for a fewer remote controls on the table, having a remote for soundbar itself will definitely help on some occasions.

For example, if you will use your TV’s remote to adjust your soundbar and you disable your TV speakers, your TV will also receive the signal and might display messages on screen informing you that the volume commands will not work due to disabled speakers. Although this might not be a big issue, you would wish that you have a separate remote intended only for your soundbar.

drivers soundbar

Drivers

Another feature you might want to consider is the speaker. Some soundbars have multiple channels—from two to five, or even more. Some of these speakers have drivers angled to different sides of the room in order to create a broader sound.

Also look for soundbars with speakers that are powered by wireless amplifiers. This will eliminate the need for many cables connected here and there. Also, it is important to consider soundbars with subwoofers or amplifiers to create a better quality sound.

Online Access

Aside from the aforementioned, you might also want to check if your soundbar could be connected online to have access to movies or shows from different music and movie portals. This could be especially helpful if your TV cannot be connected online and you want to access contents from the Internet easily.

Other Needs

The points above are just a tip of the iceberg. There are still many considerations you might want to look into before buying soundbars.

Depending on your preferences and needs, you might want to fully scrutinize the product to see to it that you are paying for what it is worth. Which is why here I am giving you a list of soundbars that may work for you as it did for me. Plus, they’re only $100 (even less!).
