Kenwood DPX501BT Review: Is this 2-Din Receiver Worth Your Money?

I’ve got a number of double din receivers installed then replaced eventually. It’s time-consuming and expensive to have them replaced every now and then. But I guess it is really necessary because they wear out over time and the technology goes further. I need to go within the flow. However, there’s one double din receiver I can’t let go despite the upgrades of most receivers – Kenwood DPX501BT.

The Kenwood DPX501BT could be a little off from the more high-end versions but it retains the quality that can last for long periods of time. I’ve had mine for almost three years and still works perfectly! So I’d like to go each and every detail and let you know how it worked.

Kenwood DPX501BT: Features and Benefits

Will the Kenwood DPX501BT fit your standards? Let’s see!

Just like the most common size of receivers, Kenwood DPX501BT is a double din head unit. It can fit in 4-inch stereo heads. Mine accommodates 4-inch stereos so the installation was no trouble. I think the size is large enough for the control buttons and screen display.

Display Quality

This receiver is not a touchscreen stereo like what most users prefer these days. But despite its basic characteristic, the screen display features a user-friendly interface integrated with easy-to-use control buttons. The 1.5 Line LCD screen displays the media information clearly in those illuminated letters. The 12-hour digital clock makes it also easy for me to check the time.

Another thing I like about the Kenwood DPX501BT stereo is you can customize the illumination and display colors according to your preference.

The only thing that didn’t impress me quite much is the brightness display. At night, the letters are bolder and more readable. I think the brightness or the backlight’s better at this time. But during daylight, I was expecting the same brightness but it seems dimmer and the letters are a bit harder to read.

Connectivity and Phone Compatibility

Kenwood is not the entirely old school. And to keep up with the advancement of the technology, Kenwood DPX501BT is equipped with Bluetooth which can be integrated with the latest versions of smartphones, Apple or Android devices. It enables a wireless music streaming between the stereo and the smartphone or any device with a Bluetooth connection. The pairing is quick and easy! Works perfectly fine. And aside from audio streaming, receiving calls hands-free is not a problem.

Other stereos are designed for a particular device but this Kenwood DPX501BT is compatible with Apple and Android devices. The controls for Android and Apple devices, such as iPod, iPhone and iPad, are also available for easier navigation.

If you’re also a fan of Spotify, Pandora or Google Music Player, the Bluetooth connection will service you to stream all your music from these sites wirelessly!A wireless remote control is also included.

Other Features

Kenwood DPX501BT 2-DIN CD Receiver with Built in Bluetooth

The Kenwood stereo can also stream music from USB-supported devices. So if your phone or device has no Bluetooth available, that would be fine. Direct connection is also reliable and stable. The USB and AUX ports allow you to connect removable devices and hence, browse external media files.

If you’ve got CDs for your music and other media files, the Kenwood stereo is a CD receiver that can read and play CDs with various music formats such as MP3, WMA and AAC. And if you’re all settled with your favorite radio station, this one’s got built-in AM/FM radio.

Compared to other stereos on the market and considering all its built-in features, I think Kenwood DPX501BT is just right for the price. However, if you find it a bit costly or over your budget, there are seasonal offers where you can get this on a bargain.

If you’re looking for an excellent receiver to match your 6x9 speakers or 6.5-inch speakers and subwoofers, you can give this a try.

The Drawbacks

When it comes to its overall sound quality, there were little to no issues. It excels greatly on its prime function. However, the brightness of the screen seems very dim and the information displayed are hardly readable during daylight.

On the other hand, the Kenwood DPX501BT does not feature a touchscreen display. Though not everyone may think of it as a negative point, those who prefer upgraded version may think so.

Who is it for?

The Kenwood DPX501BT would be the perfect choice for those who are more into basics and less complicated interface regardless of what most versions could offer today. This stereo showcases functional buttons that make it easier to operate and customize. As long as you have a 4-inch stereo head, this will definitely fit in! The installation will cause you no trouble!

Kenwood DPX501BT Reviews: What the Users Say

A lot of customers who bought this product expressed their satisfaction regarding the general features. However, the affordable price, sound quality, Bluetooth connection and the customization of illuminating colors were mostly pointed out by the users.

Bad reviews were also brought up regarding the brightness display during the day. As what I have also observed from the unit, the users expressed their disappointment about this matter. The display wasn’t bright enough to make the information readable. Some also complained about the size of the stereo. Though they can accommodate double din head units, they had a difficult time installing the Kenwood DPX501BT in their vehicles.
