Step 1: Identify the Problem

Common Vizio TV Remote and Vizio Sound bar Remote Problems

As our remote controls are not made to outlast the world, you will find them acting up from time to time due to different reasons.

Falling on a hard surface, being submerged in water, or just the usual wear and tear because we’re too lazy to stand up and press the buttons on the TV are the usual causes of some of them.

Power

One of the most popular problems Vizio users encounter with their remote, and probably with any TV remote, is that it does not turn on, no matter how many times the power button has been clicked.

Connection

Another problem is that the remote seems to be disconnected from the Vizio TV or sound bar for some reason even though both devices are turned on.

The TV or the sound bar may not be responding to volume increase and decrease or channel switching.

Step 2: Fix the Problem

Troubleshooting Vizio TV Remote and Vizio Sound Bar Remote

More often that not, our Vizio TV remote is actually not yet ready to say goodbye. Sometimes, it just takes a little bit of power cycling, fixing, or throwing a penny on a wishing well.

Clear the Line of Sight

The first troubleshooting fix you have to take is checking if the line of sight from your Vizio TV or sound bar to your remote is not obstructed.

This usually happens when we place knick-knacks on the TV or sound bar stand, promising to remove it later, but then completely forgets all about it until we cannot power on either of the two devices.

If you know where the IR receiver on the Vizio TV or sound bar is, which is usually at the bottom left or bottom right, double check if none is obstructing it.

Side question for TV makers, why not place the IR receiver on top of the TV instead?

Going back, if all’s clear, check how you press the Vizio remote. One of your fingers may be blocking IR signal coming off the remote control.

Ensure the Right Source is Selected

Because a Vizio remote may be used with different devices including non-Vizio sources and we’re too busy to remember it, it is possible that the remote is getting a signal from the wrong source.

To correct this, press the right source indicated on the Vizio remote and sees if it now works.

Check the Saved Channels

In the case of Vizio TVs, there might be instances that the channel scan does not seem to be cooperating.

To fix this, make sure that the TV is the selected source and that there are saved channels. Otherwise, perform a channel scan.

Note, however, that this is only for Vizio TV that is connected via coaxial cable. If the connection is via HDMI or component cables, no channel scan is necessary.

Confirm There's Enough Battery Power

If you’ve had the Vizio remote for quite some time and you’ve been busy putting off replacing its batteries, chances are they have been discharged or drained.

To check, get a new pair of batteries and install them in your remote correctly. Afterward, check if it solves the problem.

Power Cycle the Remote

“With great power comes great responsibility,” says Spiderman’s Uncle Ben. But that is not the case with Vizio remote. It’s more like “with great power comes hanging and freezing.”

This is probably caused by the excess power in the remote; hence, this power has to be drained off of it.

To do this, remove both of the batteries then press the power button for about 5 seconds. After that, press all the remaining keys on the remote to make sure none of them is stuck. Lastly, return the batteries in place.

Update the Software

If your Vizio sound bar is any of these in the list, you may need to update its software.

These Vizio sound bars are known to have issues with the remote software, so it’s better to keep them software updated.

Input the Correct Code

If you are using a universal remote for your Vizio sound bar, make sure that you have input the correct codes.

Note, however, that not all universal remote controls may work with a Vizio sound bar despite setting the right code.

Make Sure the TV and Soundbar are Working

In some cases, it is not the remote that has the problem but the sources themselves. This can be because they do not get enough power or they need restarting.

Check if your Vizio TV or sound bar is properly plugged into a power source. If it is, restart either of them. They might not have been turned off correctly.

Step 3: When All Else Fails

If you have done all of the troubleshooting steps above, and nothing has happened, perhaps it’s time to bite the bullet and get a replacement.

Remember, though, that if your remote is less than 12 months old, it may still be under warranty. Contact Vizio’s customer or technical support at 1 (888) 849-4623 to check.

Otherwise, check the list below of Vizio TV remote and sound bar remote replacements. These are handpicked Original Manufacturer Equipment (OEM) products.

This means they will work like the original ones but without hurting your pocket that much. Note, though, that OEM products may have some variations in features and functions.

What type of TV Remote Should You Choose?

Choosing a new Vizio TV remote depends on the type of TV you have and what you usually do with them.

If you merely watch TV shows or movies, a basic TV remote control should suffice for you.

If, on the other hand, you use your TV as the extension of your tablet, meaning you browse the Web using it, a TV remote with a Qwerty keyboard may be more helpful.

Vizio Sound Bar Remote Replacement Buying Guide

What Type of Sound Bar Remote Should You Choose?

A Vizio sound bar remote is a bit more complicated than its TV remote counterpart.

Vizio’s sound bar remote may use different signals for different types of sound bar; hence, it is the compatibility that you should look for above all.

Next is to check if the remote has options for different inputs because your sound bar may not be connected only to your TV.

You also have to check if your sound bar system has a separate subwoofer or not. Then you see if the remote replacement has the sub control feature.

It is also nice if the audio enhancements embedded in the sound bar are found in the remote replacement. These can be the surround sound, dialog enhancement, etc.

The Ultimate Remote Replacement

If the price is not a matter of importance to you and you want to get a good remote replacement, try Logitech Harmony 650 Infrared All in One Remote Control.

It may be a bit pricey, but it promises to replace up to 8 remote controls you have at home. Not bad, eh?

But before purchasing, make sure it works with your Vizio TV or sound bar.

Conclusion

A remote control is one of the greatest gifts we humans have received. It allows us to switch channels, load movies, control volume, etc. even without touching our entertainment devices.

In short, it has satisfied our desire to control objects without lifting a finger. Almost.

But sadly, these remote controls do not last for as long as we want them too. Some become our dogs’ toy; some magically disappear beneath our couches; and some just stop working.

Good thing not working doesn’t always mean it’s over for these handy remote controls. We may still fix them before we replace them.

If after replacing them, you still cannot use your Vizio TV or sound bar, perhaps it is the entertainment devices that have the problem instead.

Head on to my article for a possible sound bar replacement and watch out for my next review of different TVs that can be your alternatives.
